Can we prevent bird/animal strikes to aircraft at airports?




Monsoon is harbinger of bird and animal collisions with Aircraft. Can we stop air accidents?

Dr S M Satheesan, India’s leading bird strike prevention Expert, currently working with IGI Airport, New Delhi, of GMR-DIAL, is available to make your airport safe from the angle of bird/animal menace to aircraft operation after June 30th 2009.

Dr S M Satheesan is India’s leading Bird/Animal Aircraft Strike Hazard Management (BASHM) Specialist (Bird Strike Consultant), who has been employed with GMR-Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) since November 2006, is retiring from regular service on the 30th of June 2009. His mission in life is to make as many airports as possible safe with regard to bird and animal menace to aircraft operation, prevent air disasters and thereby save lives of passengers and aircraft.

BASHM is a unique field on which Dr Satheesan had learned the basics at the Bombay Natural History Society working under late Dr Salim Ali, the greatest Ornithologist India has ever seen. He carried out his doctoral programme on Pariah Kites from Mumbai University in 1992 while working with BNHS and under the guidance of Mr J C Daniel, the then Director of BNHS. He had worked for the BASHM of 32 airports (civil and military) all over India since 1980. He has to his credit more than 60 publications-articles, papers, and notes- on birds, animals, nature and species conservation, as well as bird strike prevention in various periodicals and journals including that of International Civil aviation Organization (ICAO) in February 1992 and proceedings of meetings of Bird Strike Committees such as BSCE, IBSC, Joint US/Canada BSC, IAF, AR & DB, GOI, Defence Ministry, and that of BNHS, WWF-India, EWT of South Africa and Raptor Research Foundation. He has been imparting training in BASHM to officers of AAI, IAF and IN at NIAMAR of AAI and IFS of IAF since 1992.

Dr Satheesan had visited several airports abroad to understand bird and animal control measures adopted by them. In this way he rose to the position of India’s No.1 expert in BASHM. He is also registered with Technical Co-operation Bureau (TCB) of ICAO as a Bird Strike Consultant. His work on BASHM is well known to DGCA also and he was part of DGCA Safety Cell inspection of IGI Airport, New Delhi in April 1994.

Dr satheesan had participated in the ICAO Train Air programme in 1996 preparing training material for Standard Training Package (STP) for Bird hazard Prevention at National Institute for Aviation Management and Research (NIAMAR) of Airports Authority of India.
